5-Day Kilimanjaro Mountain Trekking via Marangu Route
Day 01: Trekking from Marangu Gate to Mandara hut
After an early breakfast, meet your professional mountain guide for a comprehensive trek briefing before driving for about one hour to the Kilimanjaro National Park gate. After completing the registration process, your exciting climb officially begins. The trail winds through a lush tropical rainforest, home to towering eucalyptus trees, giant ferns, colorful birds, and playful black-and-white colobus monkeys. Enjoy the cool mountain air as you gradually ascend through this rich ecosystem. Along the way, you may take a short detour to Maundi Crater, where spectacular panoramic views of northern Tanzania and the surrounding landscapes await. Continue to Mandara Hut (2,720 m) for dinner and your first overnight stay on Mount Kilimanjaro.
Day 02: Mandara to Horombo Hut
After breakfast, leave the lush rainforest behind and continue your ascent through the scenic moorland zone toward Horombo Hut. The trail passes rolling hills dotted with giant lobelias and towering groundsels, offering a unique alpine landscape. Along the way, enjoy breathtaking views of the rugged Mawenzi Peak and the snow-capped Kibo Summit, your ultimate destination. As you gain altitude, you may begin to notice the effects of thinner air, making a steady pace essential. Upon arrival at Horombo Hut (3,720 m), enjoy a warm dinner and a well-earned overnight rest as your body continues to acclimatize.
Day 03 Horombo to Kibo hut
You will continue your ascent, leaving the last water point behind as you cross the vast alpine desert known as the Saddle of Kilimanjaro, located between the majestic Kibo and Mawenzi peaks. At first, the trail passes through sparse upper heathland vegetation, but it soon transforms into a dramatic “moonscape” of volcanic rock and ash. The landscape becomes more barren and silent as you approach higher altitude, creating a powerful sense of isolation and achievement. After this challenging section, you will arrive at camp for dinner, rest, and final preparations for your midnight summit attempt to Uhuru Peak.
Day 04: Kibo hut to Summit to Horombo Hut
In the early hours of the morning, typically between midnight and 2:00 am, your summit attempt begins under the stars. You will ascend steep and demanding scree or snow-covered slopes toward Gilman’s Point, located on the rim of the crater. From here, the final push continues along the crater edge to Uhuru Peak (5,895 m), the highest point in Africa.
Throughout the climb, you are rewarded with breathtaking views that feel almost otherworldly. Take time to capture a memorable summit photo to share with family and friends. After celebrating your achievement, you will begin your descent, stopping at Kibo Hut for lunch and rest before continuing down to Horombo Hut for your overnight stay.
Day 05: Horombo hut to Aruaha
Following breakfast, begin your gentle descent from the summit route, leaving the alpine zone behind as you pass through the moorland back toward Mandara Hut. The trail then continues into the lush rainforest, where the path can be wet, slippery, and muddy, especially at lower elevations. Trekking poles and gaiters are highly recommended for added stability and comfort. You will continue down through the forest until reaching Marangu National Park Gate, where you will receive your summit certificate. A vehicle will transfer you back to your Arusha hotel.
